Is Whole Plant CBD the Best Type of CBD Oil?

WOW Factor: Both “whole plant” and “full spectrum” CBD oils contain a wide range of plant compounds including: CBD, CBG, CBN, terpenes, and very low concentrations of THC.

What You Need To Know: Most companies use the terms “full spectrum” and “whole plant” interchangeably as there is relatively little -if any- difference between the two types of hemp extracts. Both full spectrum hemp oil and whole plant hemp oil contain more plant compounds than just CBD. As opposed to isolating singular compounds from the plant, all elements are harvested together. This way, the compounds operate synergistically -the way that nature intended.

Whole Plant vs. Full Spectrum CBD Explained

With all of cannabidiol’s potential benefits, it’s no surprise that the CBD Market is exploding. Expected to reach heights of $22 billion by 2022 -outpacing the American cannabis market by $2 billion -the hemp-derived CBD Market is still in it’s infancy. A growing number of industry entrants, combined with a lack of uniform federal regulation, puts the onus on the consumer to differentiate one CBD product from the next. A difficult task considering the sheer number of CBD products on the market.

To help, we’re demystifying one common question when it comes to deciding which CBD oil to buy:

What is whole-plant CBD extract?

Below, find out why Whole Plant CBD oil or Full Spectrum CBD oil may be the best type of CBD you can buy.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannibidiol or CBD is one of the 85 different cannabinoids that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. CBD Oil has gained popularity in recent years due to it’s potential ability to provide relief from common ailments such as:

  • Social anxiety
  • Generalized anxiety
  • Chronic Stress
  • Pain
  • Inflammation

As its name implies, CBD Oil generally consists of an oil-based formula containing: CBD extract, a plant-based oil, and natural scents or flavors. Many brands use coconut oil or MCT oil to aid in absorption of the cannabinoid along with essential oils or natural flavorings.

Types of CBD Extracts

As mentioned above, the cannabis plant contains at least 85 different cannabinoids.  While some CBD companies strip the hemp plant of every cannabinoid except CBD -creating an isolate- others leave the natural profile of the hemp plant in tact -creating a full-spectrum or whole-plant formula.

The following are the most popular type of CBD extracts:

  • Isolate: contains only CBD, and no other cannabinoids;
  • Broad-spectrum: contains multiple cannabinoids naturally found in the cannabis plant, but doesn’t contain THC;
  • Full-spectrum: contains all cannabinoids naturally found in the cannabis plant, including trace amounts of THC, and;
  • Whole-plant: contains the most complete cannabinoid and terpene profile, including trace amounts of THC.

Whole Plant vs. Full Spectrum: What’s The Difference?

Most companies will use the terms full-spectrum and whole-plant interchangeably as there is relatively little -if any- difference between the two types of extracts.

Both full spectrum hemp oil and whole plant hemp oil contain more plant compounds than just CBD alone. As opposed to isolating singular compounds from the plant, all elements are harvested together. This way, the compounds operate synergistically -the way that nature intended. Full-spectrum oil and whole plant oil contain CBD, CBG, CBN, terpenes, and very low concentrations of THC.

The Entourage Effect

Both Whole Plant and Full Spectrum formulas are thought to be more effective than isolates due to the Entourage Effect. The Entourage Effect suggests that one isolated molecule from the hemp plant (I.e. CBD isolate) is not enough to grasp the plant’s full potential. Instead, all of the compounds are magnified when they are extracted and presented together (I.e. in Full Spectrum or Whole Plant Formulas).

Keeping the plant’s compounds together allows the seemingly “inactive” metabolites and other molecules to increase their own presence as well as the presence of other components. This is generally a departure from most goals in the pharmacological industry, which is to isolate the individual components of hemp. However, certain studies show that the minor cannabinoids and terpenes present in a whole plant formula provide a better result than a single isolated compound.

Whole Plant CBD Oil: Benefits

Nature is intelligent. Because the plant is in its most ‘pure’ form with all of its components intact, it is able to target more areas in the body than any one compound could target alone. For example, the terpenes and phenolics present in a full spectrum formula can have effects similar to those of CBD on pain, mood, and inflammation.

While CBD has the potential to reach more than 65 targets throughout the body, its activity at each target varies. This is where the other compounds come in and could be more effective than CBD. Due to this teamwork, it’s widely believed that the most effective CBD products are those that contain trace amounts of the plant’s naturally occurring cannabinoids -including THC.

While isolates are ineffective before and after certain dosage amounts, certain studies show that full-spectrum oil provides more benefits as dosage increases

Does Whole Plant CBD Oil Contain THC?

In short, yes. However, only in trace amounts. In order to be federally legal in the United States, CBD oil must contain less than 0.3 percent THC. As THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the ‘high’ traditionally associated with cannabis, using hemp-derived whole plant CBD extract will generally not produce this effect.

The most commonly reported side effects of CBD are:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Upset Stomach
  • Changes in Appetite
